What is Short Run
Publishing?
Short Run Publishing
simply means we can print a low number of books quickly—and still maintain high
standards in quality book publishing. For example, if you need as few as 100
books, Selah will publish them for you in as little as 6 weeks, depending on the
services needed to publishing your book. AND…if you find you need additional
copies, we can have them printed for quickly. Advancements in technology over
the past few years have made Short Run Publishing not only possible but
affordable.

How does Short Run Publishing work?
Once we have your book typeset and cover design complete, we schedule press time
to produce your books. Your cover and text pages are then produced by state of
the art digital printing presses/engines. High gloss lay-flat film lamination is
applied to your cover and then bound with your text pages creating a perfect
bound book. Because pages and covers are always uneven after binding, your
book is trimmed with computer precision to the final trim size.

Another publisher
offered me a “Print on Demand” contract allowing me to print one book at a time.
Why shouldn’t I use print on demand?
Be sure to check the fine print. Most “Print on Demand” publishers require you
to buy an initial package, plus purchase a first printing of 25 to 100 books.
The price you pay for each book is determined by the suggested list price less
your author discount. Normally you will be offered anywhere from 40% to 60%
depending on which package you purchase. Because you will purchase books at a
discount based on the retail price, the publisher inflates the retail price of
your book. The higher the list price the more you pay per book. Inflated prices
return the publisher a handsome profit on each book. Unfortunately, higher
retail prices have a negative effect on sales. Buyers think twice about
purchasing an overpriced book. This can be counter productive in getting the
message God has given you out to a public in need. Worse yet, once you have your
book with a print on demand publisher, you will not benefit from deeper
discounts when purchasing larger quantities of books. Regardless of the number
of books you order you will always pay the same rate as if you purchased one
book. With Selah Publishing Group’s Short Run Publishing you are always able to
enjoy the benefit of the best prices available for the amount of books you
print.

Who establishes the
retail price of my book using Short Run Publishing?
You set the retail
price of your book! Pricing is a very delicate issue. Authors must be careful
when pricing their book to keep it affordable to the general buying public.
After all, what good is the message God has given you if your price discourages
others from reading it. Selah Publishing Group will assist you in determining
the retail price of your book but the decision is ultimately yours, as it should
be!

Short Run Publishing sounds to good to be true.
Yes, it does sound too good to be true. However, it is true. When we were
first introduced to cellular phones, the thought of being able to carry a small
phone around everywhere you went seemed to good to be true. Not long ago,
placing a little round disk into a DVD player and watching your favorite movie
with unsurpassed quality in audio and video, also sounded too good to be true.
Yet today, just as cellular phones and DVD players are possible, so is Short Run
Publishing. Because of Short Run Publishing technology, it has never has it been
easier and cost effective to produce a small number of books.

Why don't all publishers offer Short Run Publishing?
In one word “Profits”. Out Short Run Publishing contracts which include
typesetting, cover design and the first 100 books, based on 144 pages, will
total an estimated $2,000.00. A publishing contract to print 2,500 books of the
same page count will total an estimated $8,500.00. The larger the sale the
greater the profit! As a result, most publishers will work hard to convince you
to print larger quantities and will not offer smaller print runs.

Are other publishers moving into Short Run Publishing Technology?
They certainly are. When we were investigating this new technology, we read
a testimonial of a large royalty-publishing house on the east coast that
publishes around 40,000 different titles. They are in the process of digitizing
all 40,000 titles, thereby emptying their warehouses of inventory. This allows
them to print only the books they need in order to meet sales demands. This is
saving them thousands of dollars in warehousing expenses. In time, all
publishers will move to Short Run Publishing, but Selah Publishing does not have
to move that direction—we are already there.
<top>
Are Short Run Publishing Prices competitive with prices I should expect from
a publisher who cannot (or does not) use this new technology?
Certainly! Short Run Publishing will definitely save you money in most cases.
Remember, that to determine your cost per book you have to factor in
shipping costs, warehouse expenses, and the cost of books that never sell. If
you were to print 2,500 books at a cost of $3.40 per book ($8,500.00 total),
what would your cost be per book if you only sold 500 copies? $17.70 per book!
The advantage of Short Run Publishing gives you is the option to print a smaller
amounts of books and affordably test the waters. When you have proven you can
sell larger quantities of books you can print larger runs at greatly reduced
costs.

I want to
publish my book but am concerned about what quantity to print. How can Short Run
Publishing help me?
Using Short Run
Publishing methods, we are able to print runs as small as 100 books, and go up
from there. This allows you to determine the market demand for your title before
you invest large sums of money to print a thousand or more books!
<top>
Doesn't cost per
book go up on smaller print runs?
Yes. Smaller book
runs usually cost more per book than larger print runs. However a smaller run
can build confidence in marketing that larger book do not. A smaller print run
allows you to sell without the risk of an initial large investment that is
required for larger print runs.
<top>
If Short Run
Publishing cost more money per book, why would I want to print a smaller run?
The majority of
authors (especially first time authors) find it impossible to determine whether
their book will sell 100 books or 250,000 books. Short Run Publishing gives you
the ability to test market your book without a large investment. Even large
corporations, such as McDonalds, test market each new product they develop. They
may feel confident that the product will do well, but before spending large sums
of money, they test their new product in a selected market first. Have you even
been to a McDonalds in another region of the country and find they have items
you have never seen before? When you do, it’s because they are testing the
market to see how the public will respond to the new product. If this is the
method of deep pocket corporations, why wouldn't you want to test market your
product? Once McDonald's has determined the success of their new product, they
decide the most profitable path to take next. Short Run Publishing also allows
you to "get any bugs" out of your books. For instance, if you misspelled
an important name, or forgot to include some important feature, you are able to
make the corrections before you have thousands of books printed that may just
sit in your garage for years.
<top>
If I need to
alter, or decide I want to rewrite portions of my book, is there a charge to
make the changes?
Yes. When we
contract with you for Short Run Publishing, we will be specific as to our
charges for corrections and changes so you know what to expect. However, every
package we offer includes a limited number of corrections which can be made
during the proofing stage at no additional charge.
<top>
If I print using
Short Run Publishing, what happens if I sell books quickly and need more books
fast?
This is the beauty
of Short Run Publishing. Because everything has been created with files ready to
print, we can produce books quickly. Even though turn around time can vary do to
current work load, the bottom line is that you can get your books fast.
<top>
What happens if
I find that my book is selling quickly and I want to print large runs to
maximize my profit margins?
Because all of your
files have been created in state of the art computer software, the same files
which were used for Short Run Publishing can now be used to print larger runs on
conventional offset or web presses. As a result, there are no additional setup
fees or alterations necessary to print 1,000 or more books at reduced prices.
Printing larger runs will greatly reduce your cost per book compared to runs of
500 or less.
